Weird and Gross People: Porn stars and the naked truth

0
0

I haven’t done one of these in awhile, but it’s nice to keep perspective when someone attempts to shine a positive light on a subject and trolls come out of the woodwork to project their own damaged views upon them–and in this case “us”.

Roger Dobson at The Independent posted an article entitled Porn stars and the naked truth about porn stars being healthier than the usual opinion, based upon studies conducted. There are plenty of positive comments, but always a few or more from the small-minded.

I would like to emphasize to good people who live/work alternative lives/jobs that when judgment comes your way, you must always, always consider the source. I’ve had my fair share of what “they” think about me, and usually “they” watch porn, collect visual depictions of sexually abused minors, cheat on their spouses, lie, etc. etc. I may have been a porn star, but I’m also a good person who never cheated on or conned anyone. People ought to know that stereotypes do not apply to everyone on every side of any fence.

Now for some comments!

Weird and Gross:

“Personally I fail to understand how women who in many incidences are exposed to physical pain and humiliation for money can possibly be psychologically healthier than women who engage in functional modes of work.”Assuming all porn stars are constantly subjected to physical pain and “humiliation” and no woman in a non-sex job is ever subjected to either?? Ha!

“2 picketts TO TITTSBURGH PLEASE, THESE DISEASE RIDDEN DOLTS, AND DRUGGIES SHOULD BE PUT AWAY”Wow. That’s sentiment way better than a study that focuses on actual people. Kudos to you TITTSBURGH! XD

“A pornstar during her career will hardly ever mention the truth. It’s her job to look appealing, no wants to watch a girl on video with thoughts of “she’s on drugs, she’s in pain, she’s an alcoholic, she’s probably very depressed and resents living her life that way, she probably suffers from manjor anxiety and panic episodes, she’s probably got an STD. Why not interview pornstars who left/quit the industry.” I volunteer!!

“Usual Sensationalist story.” Man! I’m just so sick of those usual happy hooker stories! There are like in my face every day!!!! The positivity is making me positively sick, I tell you!

“Vain, shallow, in denial and relying on the fantasy of “spirituality”. So women should aspire to the existence of a porn star – seriously?”Hells no! They should aspire to be in loveless marriages where they beat down and drain their husbands and have masses of kids they raise to be bigots. You know, like you.

“Next thing they’ll tell us is women who have abortions are healthy and happier.”Definitely not if they were raped or mentally ill and taken advantage of. In that case abortion is just miserable.

“What utter nonsense – the ‘ market terminology’ gives the whole PR piece away – ‘industry’ replaces ‘prostitution’, pimping replaces ‘production values’, ‘porn stars’ replaces prostitutes, ‘empowerment’ replaces ‘enslavement’. All in the service of a systematic marketing drive through desensitization – the expansion of a multibillion dollar international exploitative dehumanising and degrading racket.” Uh…. that’s because it’s a, uh… legal “industry”… with actual “producers” and “production value” with “porn stars” and “empowerment”??? So much intellect projected and yet Tittsburgh was more succinct. Actual response: “Please, don’t confuse the legal adult industry with sexual slavery. Conflating the two is both intellectually lazy and dishonest, and is like comparing a career soldier to a conscript. The problem with sexual slavery isn’t the sex, it’s the slavery, and if you think that there aren’t still non-sex-related kinds of human trafficking nowadays, you’re mistaken and may need to check to see whether your knowledge of the girly bars of Pattaya is based more on getting a slight thrill from thinking about forced prostitution than a genuine concern for human rights issues.” Ooooooh…. You got served!  :o

“Was this study carried out by an idiotic bunch of men” I love it when people don’t assume only “idiot men” watch porn. It warms the cockles.

“Porn actresses live in a world of fakery and lies. How can we believe a single word they say to researchers?” Handle? “The Boggart” lol

“Men need to understand that women play one role with religious fervour throughout their lives and that involves holding men to ransom sexually. If they are incapable of doing this they will feign emotional support to a man to get what they want and then withdraw it when the time is right. If men were more cynical about women;’s motives there would be less misunderstanding in the man v woman world..” Holy crap! That’s one thwarted dude. Whatever you do, please do not become a homicidal maniac!! There. Is. HELP!

“well…can’t say as I’m surprised….shallow women who sell their bodies enjoy a lifestyle involving lots of money and D**k. Who would have thought it? LOL”Probably a blue-haired old lady with lots of cats. lol

“What the report failed to mention is that almost 100% of these actors are liars .. thus completely invalidating their findings!” Uh… right. Because people who perform don’t have artistic truth at the core of their milieu… Better to perform, I mean LIE, than say… steal from people or con them through, uh… lies? I’m sold! It’s lies! All lies!!!!

“Well then I guess the authors of this report would be delighted for their daughters to have a career in porn! …No, thought not!”Yeah! Nice way to shame the parents, “Hanni”! Totally not my parents fault that I did sex work but hey… they only know me as an actual human being with awesome traits and stuff. Do you kick puppies? Yeah, thought so!

Not Even Remotely Weird OR Gross:

“I am perpetually amused at the extent people are willing to live out their moral fantasies through other peoples lives, as if they should be so lucky that all moral decisions came down to sex, and not the mass of unloving and unhelpful decisions we all make every day.” Amen!

“Pornography is art. I could not think of anything more demeaning than an attractive young woman working in a fast food outlet for the minimum wage. Typically, the feminists dogs of war are straining at the leash to set their skewered, discriminatory, flawed views against other more attractive women celebrating their sexuality. I say to feminists, mind your own business!”

“Take THAT feminists. They are happy doing it, let them get on with it. You don’t get to speak for them just because you also have a vagina any more than I get to speak for all the brown haired people out there.”“Take THAT feminists.” LOL

“It may because that they have made a conscious career choice and are o.k. with the decision. There is a lot less hypocrisy about porn films and the “talent” are rewarded and not stigmatized.”

“Twenty years ago & before, more would have been burned out child stars, failed models & actresses etc. with severe self esteem issues. Further more, how the media liked to “out” them. Good luck to them. I haven’t bought many tapes/DVDs through the years, but am pleased to know of anyone doing well.”Thank you. :)

“Though never as unhealthy as actual abuse, perhaps all the people who insist that others are abused so that they can score social political and emotional points are in fact the sick ones. I notice that many commentators take the line that the business and work is abusive in itself etc. as well as being cynical about the quality of the report. I am sure that they will find the evidence that supports their views and manage to convince themselves that telling others what is acceptable behavior and what is not is a duty to mankind that they are doing in a thankless world.”What he said!

I don’t understand this misconception that people in this kind of business are in some way dysfunctional. After working in the industry myself, I find people are realists and have a better grasp on the world around them. I myself am in a stable, long-term relationship, and in higher education. I chose the job because the money is good and I actually enjoy myself, which people always are sadly shocked to learn. I find it more exciting than sitting in a supermarket all day where people treat you with more contempt than you get as a stripper or a porn star, as well as having more freedom with your hours. The fact of the matter is, if I’m enjoying myself and not hurting anyone then why should it be so taboo for me to work in such an industry?Very, very good question!

“If this is true and porn workers are comfortable with their “jobs” then that’s good news, surely. Maybe they’re lucky, the rest of us seem to make such a fuss about sex.”

 And last but not least, a comment and then an amazing response! There are some good ones in this article. Definitely worth the read.

“I’m sure you’d be pleased if your daughter told you she finally found a job servicing dirty old men.”

“Why frame it in such a way that you invoke an incest taboo which will make the person you’re speaking to immediately feel a bit “off”, rather than in a more neutral sense that also reminds you that the person in question (the daughter, in your scenario) is an adult as well? Most people have a pretty strongly negative reaction to the thought of their relatives having sex at all, so it’s going to be difficult to distinguish that from specific dislike of the thought of them doing sex work.

Let’s try again;

“I’m sure you’d be pleased if your best friend told you she finally found a job servicing dirty old men”.

Now let’s take out the value judgement on the clients, because let’s face it, most of us have sexual desires of some kind, and theirs and yours are no less valid than mine;

“I’m sure you’d be pleased if your best friend told you she’d finally found a job servicing old men”.

And finally – “Servicing” is a really loaded way of saying “Providing a service”; Would you describe a clerk in a shop as servicing you, with quite the same prurient leer? So how about the more neutral, and honest “doing porn”

So one last go;

“I’m sure you’d be pleased if your best friend told you she’d finally found a job doing porn for old men”.

Let’s roleplay that;

Friend: “I’ve finally found a job doing porn for old men!”

You: “Wow, you sound really enthusiastic about it! Good for you, it’s going to be nice having some cashflow again, isn’t it? Got any funny stories yet…”

…And if you’re a decent person, you’re genuinely happy for them.”
